We NEED Pickled Onions with our burgers!
What is so special about pickled onions? The only people who ask that are people who haven’t had them, because if you have ever had them you are hooked! Pickling vegetables is a process done to preserve shelf life, in a brine or vinegar. Now, yes these last a little bit longer than your regular red onion, but we are not sealing the can etc. like a canning process for pickling veggies. We are just enjoying these right away! ( well 3 hours after they pickle!)
They add such a wonderful tang, crunch and enhance the flavor of the onion, without that strong onion taste. I can eat them plain!
Honest Grub, Honest Foodie Pickled Onions
- 1 medium purple onion sliced thinly
- 2 cups warm water
- 1 cup apple cider vinegar
- 1 tbsp whole pepper corns
- 3 cloves garlic cut in 3rds
- 2 tbsp coconut sugar
- 2 1/2 tsp Pink Himalayan Salt
Directions:
+ Thinly slice your onion into ringlets, about 1/8 of an inch. In the large mason jar add in the thinly sliced onions. Make sure you pull apart so each strand is apart from one another.
+In a large bowl whisk together warm water, ACV, sugar & salt till all dissolved. Pour on top of the onions in the mason jar
+Then pour in the pepper corns & garlic. Screw on the lid & shake it until well combined.
+Let it marinate for at least 3 hours before using them. Better if you let them marinate in the fridge over night. They can last in your fridge for about 2-3 weeks. They are great on salads, tacos, sandwiches.. anything really!
** you can also do the lazy way like I show in the video below and not whisk, just shake vigorously once you screw the lid on tight.
Can I make the Easy Juicy French Onion Burgers low carb?
Absolutely! Feel free to omit the bun all together and put on a bed of romaine lettuce. Also, if you are me and just want to lighten up on the carbs, I just do the bottom bun. Still sprinkle the croutons on top and call it good!
How do I make the burgers using ground chicken instead?
Yes! My mom does not eat red meat, so whenever I make them for our whole family I make beef ones for me & my dad, but chicken ones for my mom, sister and Ainsley of course. The one accomidation you need to make thought with the chicken is add 1/2 cup fine bread crumbs to every 1 1b. Ground chicken is a lot more wet than beef, so you need the bread crumbs to hold it together successfully. Gluten free ones work as well!
Are you able to prep these burgers ahead of time?
Yes! Make them ahead of time in the morning, patty them out already and separate with wax paper, cover with cling wrap and refrigerate. However, you don’t have to patty them out yet if you don’t want to. You can just cover the bowl you mixed the meat in and patty them out when you are ready for dinner!
Do you have to grill them?
You do not have to grill them. You can also airy fry them and pan fry them.

Easy Juicy French Onion Soup Burger
Ingredients
- 2 lbs ground beef
- 1/4 cup minced onion
- 2 tbsp Worcester sauce
- 1/2 tsp parsley
- 1/2 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1/4 tsp celery seed
- 1/4 tsp paprika
- 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
- 3 pieces of Swiss cheese for inside the burgers
- 5 pieces of Swiss to top burgers with optional
- 1 1/2 cup croutons
Instructions
- In a large bowl add in your ground beef. Then in a medium bowl add minced onion, parsley, onion powder, garlic salt, celery seed, paprika & cayenne pepper. Whisk together in the bowl & set aside.
- Next pour the Worcester sauce over the meat. Then sprinkle in the seasoning mixture. Then with your hands mix to combine seasoning well with the meat.
- After cut your 3 Swiss cheese slices into bite sized pieces and then mix the cheese into the meat as well until fully incorporated.
- With your grill on medium heat, cook each side for 3-4 minutes. 7 minutes on medium heat typically results in burger cooked medium, so plan accordingly to your preference.
- When they have 1 minute left to cook, add the cheese on top if you would like to, for it to melt. Then start to layer your burger! I love to just do one bottom bun and add ketchup first, lettuce on top of the ketchup, burger, then pickled onions (RECIPE ABOVE– a must make!), avocado and then croutons!
- Enjoy what ever way you prefer!
