There have been some amazing food trends that have come out of 2022. However, one that is far more superior than the rest has to be the Butter Board. The butter board trend surfaced on TikTok in September when Brooklyn-based cook Justine Doiron posted her video of spreading softened butter on a wooden board and the rest was history. The butter board is more than slatering gobs of butter on a cutting board, in my opinion, it is all about what you are topping it with and what you are dipping it with that makes it! That is why we are making this butter board with a delicious herb garlic & lemon mixture within the butter, and making smasher potatoes to go with it. If you have never had smasher potatoes get ready for your taste buds to explode with this combination. Let’s get started with this Easy Garlic Herb Butter Board shall we?

How Easy is it to Make the Easy Garlic Herb Butter Board
One thing I love about this recipe is that you will have your potatoes boiling while you make the butter, and when the smasher potatoes are baking your butter flavors are melding in the fridge. This comes together in no time and a lot of hands off time as well which is always key!
Preheat oven to 425 degrees
- In a large stock pot fill up halfway with water. Add in your new potatoes. Bring water to a boil and boil for 15 minutes until you can stick a fork through your potatoes
- While the potatoes are boiling. You will make the garlic herb butter. Add your softened butter to a mixing bowl. Add in your chives, oregano, minced garlic, salt and lemon juice. With a hand held mixer, mix until fully combined and smooth. Cover and refrigerate until potatoes are ready to go in the oven
- Once you are able to pierce the potatoes with a fork, take each individual potato & spread them out on the baking sheet ( I love my silpat!)
- Spray the bottom of a pint glass with olive oil. Then take the pint glass & press down the bottom of the glass on the center of the potato to begin smashing them. Some may be bigger than others & not stay all together so as you smash, hold the outsides together with your fingers.
- Spray the tops of the smashed potatoes with olive oil or drizzle on top. Then sprinkle generously with salt & pepper.
- Take your butter out of the fridge at this point to soften on the counter. Then bake your potatoes at 425 for 20 to 25 minutes or until crispy brown on the edges
- Next take your marble serving board, and with a knife start spreading your butter on the board or make a fun tree design like you see above in the pictures!
- Place your smasher potatoes around the garlic herb butter on the board, then take one of the smasher potatoes, spread the butter on top and enjoy!

What Tools Do You Need To Make Easy Garlic Herb Butter Board
It is not a must to have a marble type of serving board, however wood being very porous can be difficult to clean after the butter has been on it for awhile. Also the marble helps keep the butter more a controlled temperature while spreading and eating
My favorite line of baking sheets, especially for smasher potatoes.
Common Questions When Making Easy Garlic Herb Butter Board
Do I need to use unsalted butter or can I use salted butter?
You don’t have to use unsalted butter, but if you do use salted butter omit the added salt from above.
How do you know that the butter is softened enough or too much for the Garlic Herb Butter Board?
You want to be able to press into your butter with your finger and it make an indentation. However, you do not want your butter where it looks like it is starting to melt.
Can I use another combination of herbs?
For this recipe you want to use chives and oregano so that it pairs well with the garlic as well as the lemon.
Do the chives and oregano have to be fresh or can I use dried seasoning?
Normally in recipes I feel like you can interchange, but for this recipe I am going to say that fresh is needed because the butter is the star of the show and the fresh tastes so much better when you spread it on versus dried crunchy herbs.
Do I have to serve the Garlic Herb Butter Board with smasher potatoes?
You don’t have to except I highly recommend 🙂 If you are in more of a time crunch, serve with toasting baguette! However, I also recommend, like I mentioned above, to use the butter on your favorite protein as well, like a steak off the grill or chicken!
